Man arrested after fatal shooting near Vierdaagse festivities

Police in Nijmegen have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting on Tuesday evening, just outside the area where the Vierdaagsefeesten, the street festivities accompanying the annual four-day marches, were taking place.

A young man was shot at around 10pm on the Graafseweg and died later in hospital despite the efforts of ambulance crews and a trauma helicopter team, broadcaster NOS reported. The arrested man is suspected of involvement in the shooting, police said. The circumstances remain unclear.

The city centre was busy at the time because of the marches, which began on Tuesday, and the accompanying festivities. Police told news agency ANP they saw no link between the shooting and the event itself.

The area around the Graafseweg remained cordoned off on Wednesday morning for forensic investigation. Police are looking into whether more people were involved and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
