A man has been arrested in Almelo in connection with the death of a Dutch tourist who was found strangled in a hotel room in Germany, close to the border.

The 35-year-old victim was discovered by staff on Sunday at Hotel Rheinpark in Rees, a German town about 30km south of Doetinchem.

A postmortem examination confirmed that the man had been strangled. He checked in to the hotel with another man on Saturday evening, but only the victim’s details were recorded in the guest register.

RTV Oost reported that the victim, from Enschede, was disabled and used a wheelchair. He was found dead by hotel staff on Sunday morning an hour after he was supposed to have checked out of the room.

German media said the pair arrived on Saturday in a Dutch-registered car from the Enschede area. They are understood to have gone to see a firework show in the area earlier in the day.

The 42-year-old man was arrested at his home in De Burcht, near Almelo, while he was walking towards his car, local media reported. He is suspected of being involved in the violent death of his companion. The vehicle also been impounded.
