Traffic fines are set to rise 2.7% in line with inflation next year, the Telegraaf reported on Friday, citing sources close to the cabinet.

The increase means someone caught driving through a red light will be fined €328, rather than the current €320, the paper said. Being caught using a phone while driving will result in a penalty of more than €450.

The size of traffic fines in the Netherlands has been criticised by both the public prosecution department and the Council for the Judiciary, which say they are not in proportion to fines issued for more serious crimes, such as theft or assault.

The council has also warned that some people face serious financial difficulties in paying fines because they increase sharply if someone fails to pay on time.

MPs have also protested, but ministers say the fines generate crucial income for the treasury. Last year traffic fines raised almost €1 billion and that will rise by several tens of millions with the inflation increase.
