Van Weel faces calls to block Kanye West concerts in Netherlands

Justice minister David van Weel is under pressure to stop Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, performing two concerts in Arnhem this year because of the rapper’s history of anti-Semitism.

The Jewish rights organisation Centraal Joods Overleg (CJO) called for Van Weel to follow the example of the UK, where Ye was due to headline the Wireless Festival in July.

The London-based rap and hip hop festival was cancelled after Ye’s travel authorisation was rescinded by the British Home Office.

Ye released a song called Heil Hitler last year and T-shirts featuring swastikas were advertised for sale on his website, before being withdrawn after sparking an outcry. The Australian government responded by withdrawing his visa to perform in the country later that year.

The 48-year-old also told conspiracy theorist and podcaster Alex Jones that he saw “good things about Hitler”.

The CJO wrote to Van Weel on Wednesday asking him to bar Ye from travelling to the Netherlands for two concerts at the GelreDome in Arnhem on June 6 and 8.

Chanan Hertzberger, chair of the organisation, said: “The UK and Australia have drawn a line. We are asking the GelreDome and the Dutch government to apply the same standards.”

A spokeman for Van Weel told Dutch News the responsibility for issuing visas lay with the immigration service IND and asylum minister Bart van den Brink.

The mayor of Arnhem, Ahmed Marcouch, rejected previous calls to have Ye’s appearances cancelled on public safety grounds. “You cannot ban someone from going on stage because they might potentially say something illegal,” he said.

Ye released a statement following the cancellation of the Wireless festival asking to meet representatives of the British Jewish community. In January he took out a full-page advert in the Wall Street Journal apologising for his previous anti-Semitic behaviour, which he blamed on bipolar disorder.

“I know words aren’t enough,” he said in his latest statement. “I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here.”
