At least 645 Dutch nationals were serving in the Israeli army in March last year, according to documents released by the Israeli military following a freedom of information request by campaign group Hatzlacha.

Of those listed, 559 soldiers held both Israeli and Dutch nationality. A further 86 had three or more passports, including a Dutch one, according to British investigative collective Declassified UK, which published the figures.

The list shows that most foreign nationals in the Israeli army also have US citizenship, followed by French, Russian and German nationals.

It is not illegal under Dutch law to serve in a foreign army although Dutch nationals can be prosecuted if it can be proven that they were involved in war crimes.
