Schiphol airport is dealing with a power outage and is investigating what the disruption could mean for flight operations, the airport said on Thursday morning.

The incident, first noted at 8.15am, comes at an awkward moment for the airport, which has already been struggling with severe winter weather.

In recent days, heavy snow and freezing temperatures have caused major disruption to air traffic, with hundreds of flights cancelled or delayed.

Schiphol had said on Wednesday that it did not expect any further cancellations on Thursday, but has not said whether that assessment will change as a result of the power failure.

Schiphol officials told the Telegraaf on Thursday they are planning a major reassessment of the airport’s measures to deal with serious snowfall following five days of chaos.

“It is 10 years ago that we had so much snow and half of the people who work here have never seen anything like it,” airport president Pieter van Oord told the paper. “We need better training.”

In particular, communication with passengers also needs to be improved, he said. For example, it took four days before emergency beds were set up for passengers who had been stranded.
