Code amber in the north as strong winds, more snow move in

The KNMI weather bureau has issued a code amber weather warning for the  northern provinces of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe from midnight on Thursday due to more snow and strong winds.

The KNMI warned that there may be drifting snow in the north, significantly reducing visibility and making travel dangerous. The warning is currently set to remain in place until Friday at midday.

At present, code yellow applies across the entire country.

The KNMI expects heavy snow overnight, particularly in the north, where between five and 10 centimetres of fresh snow may fall.

The freezing temperatures are expected to continue into the weekend, with heavy frosts overnight. There may be more snow in the south on Saturday, and Sunday will be dry with sunshine, but the temperature will remain below freezing in most places.

Warmer air will move into the Netherlands from the west on Monday, kicking off the thaw, Weeronline said.

Meanwhile, a power outage at Schiphol Airport has been resolved and no flights were cancelled as a result, according to the airport and KLM.

The outage affected Terminal 2 from around 8am on Thursday. Schiphol said the disruption caused inconvenience for passengers, while KLM reported long queues but said it was doing everything possible to ensure departing passengers could still leave on time.

According to Schiphol’s website, the power failure did not lead to the cancellation of departing flights.
