The Netherlands’ largest organic vegetable nursery has been declared bankrupt, after earlier halting its activities without explanation.

Houten-based Jongerius specialised in the early cultivation of vegetables, supplying growers with seedlings once they passed their first growth phase. It primarily served the organic sector and employed around 30 people.

Jongerius abruptly shut up shop about a month ago, catching customers and industry groups by surprise. At the time, the company gave no clear reason for the shutdown.

Curator Marco Guit said he is assessing the company’s situation and is in contact with both management and employees. The exact reasons for the bankruptcy remain unclear but Guit said he will explore whether a restart of the business is possible.

Organic produce accounted for 3.5% of total supermarket spending on food in the first six months of this year, national statistics agency CBS said in September

During the same period in 2024, organic food accounted for 3.2% of supermarket spending on groceries. The most significant increase was seen in sales of organic potatoes, fruit and vegetables.
