High-speed rail line to close for months in 2028 for repairs

The high-speed rail track between Schiphol airport and Leiderdorp will close for almost three months in the second half of 2028 for major renovation work, the Telegraaf reported on Tuesday.

Track operator ProRail has set aside 82 days for the work which is estimated to cost at least €580 million, the paper said. During the closure, four of the ten viaducts on the route that have structural defects will be repaired. The remaining structures will be tackled at a later stage.

The defects mean trains are currently unable to run at the intended speeds of 200 to 300 kilometres per hour and journeys therefore take about five minutes longer than planned. ProRail expects the repairs to cut that delay by half.

Options for diverting trains are being explored with operators NS and Eurostar which operates high speed services to London and Paris. Eurostar has said a diversion via Haarlem would add around 30 minutes to its travel times.
