NS orders new generation of Sprinter trains in €400m deal

Dutch state-owned railway company NS is buying 36 new Sprinter trains in a €400 million deal with Swiss manufacturer Stadler, marking the return of the classic yellow and blue livery to the railway’s newest fleet.

The Flirt Flex trains are expected to enter service from 2030, the company said on Wednesday.

The trains are designed for both Sprinter and Intercity use, giving NS more flexibility as passenger numbers grow. Stadler has supplied Sprinters before, and the new order forms part of a wider renewal of the national fleet.

“From 2030 we will welcome this modern train in a classic livery,” said NS chief executive Wouter Koolmees in a statement. “Yellow and blue trains have been part of the Netherlands for decades and we want to keep it that way.”

The purchase brings the total number of new NS trains on order to 205. These include 60 DDNG double-deckers from Spanish builder CAF and 109 ICNG Intercity trains from Alstom, representing an investment of more than €2 billion.

The initial order provides more than 8,000 seats, and NS is keeping the option open to buy additional units, including trains that could run to Germany and Belgium. NS and Stadler are now working on the final design before moving to production, testing and approval.
