Dutch tennis player Griekspoor will play in Russian tournament

Dutch top tennis player Tallon Griekspoor will be participating in an exhibition tournament in St Petersburg in Russia this weekend despite a boycott by the international tennis federations ATP and WTA.
No international tournaments organised by the ATP and WTA have taken place in Russia since the country invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Griekspoor, who will be teaming up with Russian tennis player and girlfriend Anastasia Potapova, is the only tennis player in the Northern Palmyra Trophies tournament who is not from Russia, Belarus or Kazakhstan.
“He is not banned from playing in Russia but I would call on him not to do it. Consider the moral aspects,” broadcaster NOS quoted foreign minister David van Weel as saying during Thursday’s debate on Ukraine.
Dutch tennis federation KNLTB said they had been in contact with Griekspoor. “We told him what our view is but at the same time it is up to the players themselves if they want to play in Russia or not,” a spokesman told the broadcaster.
Griekspoor said he would clarify his decision at a later date.
Last year, Australian player Thanasi Kokkinakis and Spanish player Roberto Bautista Agut also participated in the exhibition tournament.
