Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders pulled out of a radio election debate on Friday after a Belgian broadcaster suggested he was also the target of a Belgian terrorist cell.

Three men aged 18, 23 and 24 were arrested in Antwerp on Thursday in connection with an alleged plot to kill Belgian politicians, including prime minister Bart De Wever. One of the three has since been released.

Police found homemade explosives during a search of a house in Deurne, near the prime minister’s private home. The suspects are said to have planned to use a drone to drop explosives on De Wever.

Wilders said on Friday afternoon that he would “not go anywhere” until he was certain whether or not the Belgian media report was correct. He also declined to take part in the debate by phone.

A journalist with broadcaster VTM  said on Friday that Wilders could very possibly also be on the target list, based on “information he had received”.

Antwerp’s mayor, Els Van Doesburg, is also said to have been a target.

De Wever has meanwhile dismissed the threat against himself, by posting a picture of his sleeping cat on Instagram and asking if it is capable of catching a drone.
