Parents of German tourist killed by police settle out of court

The parents of 23-year-old Sammy Baker, who was killed by police in Amsterdam, have reached a settlement out of court, but are still pressing for the officers involved in the shooting to be prosecuted.
Baker, a German model and influencer, was in Amsterdam to celebrate his birthday when he was shot dead in August 2020.
The public prosecution department ruled at the time that police officers acted out of necessity because Baker was seriously under the influence of drugs and began to try to stab one of them as they attempted to subdue him.
City police chief Frank Paauw later admitted there was no forensic evidence that Baker had actually stabbed an officer as he had claimed following an investigation by British forensic research group Forensic Architecture.
A confidential report by police sociologist Jaap Timmer concluded that the police had created an unsafe situation by surrounding Baker, while a psychiatric expert said the police actions were not aimed at “de-escalation and reducing fear”.
The parents blamed Amsterdam police for not taking into account Baker’s “confused state”. They are also calling on the public prosecution office to remove the disproven police account of the incident on its website.
Police have confirmed the settlement, which puts an end to a five-year fight for justice by Baker’s parents. However, the family still feel police are not taking responsibility for what happened and have decided to start another legal procedure against the four officers involved in the shooting.
“We will only stop when we get justice,” Sammy’s mother, Justine Seewald-Krieger, told the Volkskrant.
