The Netherlands has more than 10 million cars, according to the latest figures from RDW, the vehicle registration authority.

Although the country is thought to have twice as many bicycles, this marks a symbolic milestone, according to the Volkskrant.

On August 17, the country had 10,000,725 vehicles with the European M1 classification – in other words, cars, minibuses and camper vans. It crossed the one-million mark in the 1960s and by the turn of the century had more than six million.

The new numbers include unsold showroom cars.

Volkswagen is the most popular brand, especially the Volkswagen Polo and Volkswagen Golf. The average Dutch car is 12 years old, although there are around 270,000 classic vehicles in circulation, 13 of them made before 1900.
