Radboud University in Nijmegen is calling on students taking part in freshers’ week activities not to cycle home on their own following an alleged incident in which a girl was pulled off her bike and almost dragged into a car.

The incident took place on Tuesday night near the Goffertpark. “The student managed to get away.  It is not clear what exactly happened,” university paper Vox said. The incident has not yet been reported to police, a spokesman told local broadcaster Omroep Gelderland.

The university said it was informed about the incident. “We are supporting the victim and we will help her make the report,” freshers’ week coordinator Elke Moser Melis told the broadcaster.

Students have reacted with shock to the news. “During freshers’ week, everyone is new to the city. Many people have left home for the first time and then this happens,” one student said.

Students said they try to keep each other safe by sharing locations. “But never cycling alone is difficult, and there’s not much you can do to solve this,” said another.

The incident comes in the wake of the murder last Wednesday of 17-year-old Lisa from Abcoude, who was cycling home alone after a night out in Amsterdam. The man arrested in the case is also accused of raping a woman and attempting to rape another earlier this month, both on the Weesperzijde in Amsterdam.
