Fire at poultry farm in Brabant kills 3,000 chickens

A fire at a chicken farm in Vessem in Brabant late on Sunday night has killed some 3,000 chickens.
According to local paper Eindhovens Dagblad, the fire broke out at 9.30 pm in an adjacent barn where the owners had stored 2,000 liters of diesel oil.
The blaze quickly spread to the chicken barn, which burned down completely. Another chicken barn with 6,000 chickens was made safe.
Some 20 firefighters were called to the scene, who took until midnight to douse the flames.
Nearly 63,000 animals were killed in 43 barn fires in the Netherlands in 2024, according to figures from the insurance industry published last April.
The number of fires is unchanged from 2023, but the number of animals killed is higher, despite government pledges to introduce new safety measures.
It is not known what caused this latest fire.
