Police are treating the death of an 80-year-old woman at her home in Amsterdam as suspicious.

The alarm was raised when the woman failed to turn up for an appointment on Wednesday. Police went to her home on Wittgensteinlaan at 3pm, where they found her lying dead.

“Because there are indications of a possible crime, the property has been designated a crime scene and the police have set up a so-called large-scale investigation team (TGO) led by a prosecution official,” a police statement said.

No details were given of the circumstances of the woman’s death or why police believe it may have been criminal act. Witnesses or neighbours with camera footage have been asked to make contact.
