Quincy Promes extradited from Dubai pending court hearing

Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has been extradited to the Netherlands from Dubai, following a request by Dutch authorities.
The plane carrying Promes landed in the Netherlands on Friday evening and he remains in custody ahead of a court hearing scheduled for July 8, the public prosecution department has confirmed.
Promes (33) was sentenced in absentia to six years in prison in February 2024 for his role in smuggling more than a tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands via the port of Antwerp. He lived and played in Russia at the time of the trial.
He was previously convicted of stabbing his nephew during a family gathering in 2020. Months later, he moved from Ajax to Spartak Moscow in a €8.5 million deal. Both cases are now under appeal.
Earlier this month, Promes told an interviewer he was willing to return to the Netherlands to attend the appeal hearings, provided he could remain free. He submitted a formal request, but the court of appeal in Amsterdam rejected it.
Promes, who played 50 times for the Netherlands, most recently turned out for Dubai United FC. He is currently without a club and available on a free transfer.
