Police arrest eight “sovereign citizens”, seize guns, explosives

Dutch police have arrested eight people suspected of belonging to an “anti-institutional” criminal network that was allegedly preparing to use violence against the authorities.

The suspects are so-called “sovereign citizens” — individuals who reject the authority of the state and the rule of law.

During searches of their homes, police found firearms, ammunition, sedatives, potential explosives and “dangerous chemicals”. They also seized phones and laptops.

The arrests took place at locations across the country, including Ommen, Leeuwarden, Den Bosch and Waddinxveen. The suspects, aged between 39 and 74, are being held in solitary confinement ahead of a remand hearing.

The investigation is continuing and police said they did not rule out making further arrests.

In February, two “sovereign citizens” received short prison sentences for threatening police officers and a bailiff with a terrorist motive.

The two men are known as prominent and outspoken members of a group estimated to number around 10,000 people. Members often refuse to pay tax or rent, leading to frequent confrontations with police and bailiffs.

The national anti-terrorism group NCTV said in 2023 it was concerned some members of the movement may resort to violence.
