No NS trains running nationwide on June 6 due to rail strike

There will be no NS trains running anywhere in the Netherlands on Friday, June 6, because of a strike by rail workers in the central region.

The disruption is expected to have a nationwide impact because a large part of NS’s operations run through Utrecht province, and the country’s rail network is coordinated from Utrecht.

Trains will continue to run between Amsterdam Central and Schiphol airport and international trains will also operate as normal, except for the Eurocity Direct service, the NS said.

The strike follows a breakdown in talks between NS and the railway unions, who had given the company a deadline of 5 pm on Tuesday to comply with their demands for an improved pay deal.

The NS has offered an annual pay rise of 2.55%, but the unions say this is insufficient. They are seeking a higher increase to offset inflation and better working conditions for staff working irregular hours.

Further strike action is planned later this month, with the western region targeted on June 10 and the northwest and east on June 12. Those strikes too could lead to nationwide problems.

Regional services offered by Arriva and others will not be affected.
