Some 650 passengers had to be evacuated from a train on Sunday when an electrical installation exploded near Castricum in Noord-Holland.

One passenger, who was hurt when flying debris hit his head, was treated at a nearby hospital. Three others suffered from smoke inhalation but did not require treatment.

The explosion, which happened in an area between compartments at 8:20 pm, halted the train and passengers had to wait for emergency train transport to take them on to Alkmaar.

A spokesperson for railway operator NS said it is unclear what caused the explosion and an investigation of the damaged section of the train is underway.
