A fountain with a name that few locals in Hoofddorp could pronounce has finally been given a new name which harks back to the town’s early history.

The Hódmezövásárhely fountain on a roundabout close to the town hall got its name following the town’s twinning with the Hungarian town of Hódmezövásárhely but has been known by locals as the “hutsy flutsky” fountain and various other monikers since then.

The twinning agreement ended in 2014, but only now has the council decided to change the fountain’s name. A public competition resulted in suggestions such as  De navel van Hoofddorp, McFonteinFace and De Hongaar, with council officials finally opting for the more manageable Kruisdorp fountain.

Kruisdorp is the old name for Hoofddorp but was abandoned because there was already a Kruisdorp in Zeeland. The newly-named fountain now revives a bit of Hoofddorp history, the council said.
