Dutch would arrest Netanyahu if he came to NL, minister confirms

The Netherlands will respect the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue a warrant for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and will arrest him if he sets foot on Dutch soil, foreign minister Caspar Veldkamp told parliament on Thursday.

The Netherlands will also not engage in any “non-essential” contacts with Netanyahu, former defence minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leader MohammedDeif, Veldkamp said. The ICC issued arrest warrants for all three earlier on Thursday.

“The Netherlands is 100% behind the Rome Statute,” the minister said during Thursday’s debate on his ministry’s 2025 spending plans. The statute governs the establishment of The Hague-based ICC and established four core international crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.

Netanyahu has no plans to visit the Netherlands but Veldkamp will be visiting the Middle East shortly. Geert Wilders, leader for the far-right PVV, is also planning a visit to Israel which will include a trip to an illegal Israeli settlement in the Occupied Territories.

The implications of the arrest warrant for Veldkamp’s visit still need to be worked out. Opposition parties, for example, said on Thursday neither Veldkamp nor other ministers should shake the Israeli prime minister’s hand.

There has been considerable contact between the Netherlands and Israel in the wake of the football-related violence in Amsterdam earlier this month. The Netherlands has also repeatedly denied Israeli claims that it warned Dutch officials about risks attached to the Ajax Maccabi Tel Aviv football match.
