Online banking: Getting to grips with expat money matters

August 2, 2024

Are you moving to the Netherlands and wondering how you will manage your money? ABN AMRO has specialised in helping expats deal with their finances for over 25 years.

Since the late 1990s, ABN AMRO has focused on helping new arrivals to the Netherlands take care of their banking business and so make the most of their stay.

“Your new job in the Netherlands will be filled with challenges so settling here should proceed as easily as possible for you and your family,” says financial advisor Joshua.

Digital strategy

It’s a strategy which has enabled the bank to take the lead in digital advances without forgetting the human touch. There are, after all, plenty of advantages to opening an account with a traditional high street bank that has fully embraced the digital era with a state-of-the-art mobile banking app.

“This means we can help you even before you arrive in the Netherlands,” says Diana, another of the bank’s team of expat banking specialists, all of whom are fluent in English.

“When you become an ABN AMRO customer, you’ll receive a complete package to manage your account with all the information you need.”

Applying for a BSN

This proactive approach has been made possible by the bank’s way of dealing with the requirement of a BSN – the key identification number which everyone in the Netherlands gets once they have registered with their local authority.

You need a BSN to carry out a number of essential tasks in the Netherlands, but not to open an ABN AMRO bank account. Once you have arrived and set yourself up, you then have 90 days to hand over your BSN to the bank, giving you plenty of time to get properly organised while already having access to your money.

“It takes just a few minutes to open an account with our mobile banking app,” says Joshua. “And once you have onboarded, you can make an appointment for additional advice about products such as credit cards, insurance and loans.”

Video banking

This can be done whenever you like, thanks to the bank’s video banking services, which allow customers to talk to an advisor online from anywhere in the world – at a time which suits them.

If you are planning to travel or bring your car, you may well want to switch insurance companies, for example. And liability insurance is a good idea to have as well. ABN AMRO offers a wide range of insurance policies and these too can be easily taken out online.

And if you’ve decided you like it in the Netherlands so much that you want to settle down, the bank can also help you with a mortgage. In short, ABN AMRO has got every aspect of your financial life in the Netherlands covered.
