Heavy thunderstorms are set to sweep across the Netherlands on Tuesday as temperatures soar towards 30C.

The day will begin with bright, summery conditions and temperatures of between 23C and 26C by mid-afternoon. But later in the day heavy rain, hail and thunder are expected to sweep in from the south-west.

Meteorological bureau KNMI has issued code yellow warnings for the whole country over the course of the evening, with up to 40mm of rain and gusts of wind of 80 to 100 kph, enough to cause local flooding and topple trees.

The alerts come into effect at 5pm in Zeeland, Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland and in Noord-Holland, Utrecht, Flevoland, Limburg and Gelderland at 7pm. The storms will hit Overijssel, Friesland, Drenthe and Groningen at around 8pm.

On Wednesday the cool air in the wake of the storms will dominate, putting an end to the warmer weather. Temperatures will be range between 19C and 24C. More rain is forecast for the rest of the week.
