Dutch singer Channii Monroe has filed a lawsuit accusing US producer and songwriter The-Dream of raping her and blackmailing her with a sex video.

The 33-year-old Monroe, who was born in the Netherlands as Chanaaz Mangroe, claimed The-Dream repeatedly abused and assaulted her after promising to make her “the next Beyoncé and Rihanna” when they first met in 2015.

The-Dream, 47, denies the allegations, which are included in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles citing his real name, Terius Gesteelde-Diamant.

He worked on hits including Umbrella by Rihanna and Single Ladies by Beyoncé, as well as songs for Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber.

Monroe is seeking damages for “lost wages” and for “mental pain and anguish and severe emotional distress”. She told the BBC in a statement through her lawyers: “What Dream did to me made it impossible to live the life I envisioned for myself and pursue my goals as a singer and songwriter.”

She claims T-Dream subjected her to “violent sexual encounters”, forced her to drink “excessive amounts of alcohol”, strangled her and locked her in a dark room.

On another occasion he filmed a sexual encounter with Monroe and threatened to show it to other people, the lawsuit states.

T-Dream, who has won eight Grammy awards, said in a statement released by his lawyers to the New York Times that the accusations were “untrue and defamatory”.

“I oppose all forms of harassment and have always strived to help people realise their career goals,” he said.
