Stamps are going up in price for the second time this year as PostNL posts a loss of €8 million, its Q1 figures show.

From July, it will cost to €1.14 to send a letter, a rise of five cents, PostNL said. The company already upped the price of a stamp in January from €1.01 to €1.09.

Sales were down in the first three months of the year, while higher wages for delivery workers drove up costs, PostNL said.

Director Maurice Unk said he “didn’t enjoy impromptu rises” but that they were necessary to be able to “still deliver mail five days a week while volumes are down and costs continue to go up”.

Ceo Herma Verhagen said it it “clearly time for a change” and has already lobbied to reduce mail delivery to every other day and “eventually to three days a week”.
