Police say they have made a breakthrough in the case of a 31-year-old man who has been missing since 1989.

A 60-year-old man was arrested in connection with the disappearance of Duncan Zwakke, who was last seen in the centre of Zutphen on October 17, 1989. He was 31 years old.

The arrest followed two searches of a cellar beneath a café where police believe Mr Zwakke may have been killed. Police reopened the investigation a month ago after finding references to the location in the case files.

New investigative techniques were used in the search, including scanning the river IJssel with a sonar boat, but police would not say if they had produced any fresh evidence.

The suspect, a man from Eerbeek, is in custody pending a court appearance, a police spokesman said.
