Footballer Quincy Promes has been arrested in Dubai at the request of Dutch prosecutors, paving the way for him to be extradited to the Netherlands.

Promes was detained two weeks ago at Dubai airport after he fled the scene of a traffic accident while he was in the United Arab Emirates with his club, Spartak Moscow.

The 32-year-old was expected to fly back to Russia this week after paying a fine. But on Wednesday evening the public prosecution service confirmed reports in the Telegraaf that he had been re-arrested.

Promes was sentenced to six years in jail in absentia in February for his part in smuggling more than a tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands via Antwerp.

He had previously been convicted of stabbing his nephew at a family gathering in 2020. Months later he moved from Ajax to Spartak Moscow for a fee of €8.5 million.
