National hotline to report discrimination is launched

The Netherlands has a new hotline for reporting all forms of discrimination to replace the current mishmash of phone numbers and registration systems.

From January 1, people who either experience or witness discrimination can contact 0800-0880 to report the incident to the website Discriminatie.nl.

Currently just 3% of people who experience discrimination report it, even though 11% say they feel they have been discriminated against in some form. The website aims to be a low-threshold way for people to report what has happened to them.

Experts are forecasting an increase in reported cases this year, partly due to the rise of the far right in the November general elections and the war between Israel and Hamas.

Various anti-discrimination groups are also launching a joint campaign this month in an effort to encourage more victims to come forward.
