Police have arrested a man who allegedly went on the rampage in Den Bosch, leaving a trail of shattered car windows, cash machines and petrol pumps, local Brabant media reported.

The man, who police said may not have acted alone and whose age and motivation are still unknown, also broke into a dental practice where he smashed mirrors, TVs, and medical equipment in all six treatment rooms.

Most damage was done in the De Rompert area in Den Bosch, police said.

Police started receiving reports about the man from around 11 pm on Thursday but it wasn’t until the early morning he was picked up.

Dozens of people have already spoken to their insurance companies and many more are likely to follow. A local photographer said he had counted at least 70 cars with smashed in windows.

The photographer said it looked as if the man had been wielding “a very big hammer”.
