Ajax could manage no more than a home draw against Olympique Marseille in their first Europa League clash on Thursday evening.

After what the Parool described as a “festival of errors”, the Amsterdammers gave away a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 at the final whistle.

On Sunday Ajax, who are struggling in the Eredivisie, meet arch rivals Feyenoord in the domestic competition. The Dutch club has also started an investigation into technical director Sven Mislintat’s role in the purchase of Croatian player Borna Sosa at the end of the summer transfer window.

Also in Group B, English club Brighton & Hove Albion lost 2-3 to AEK Athene. Ajax meet the Greek side away on October 5.

In the Conference League there was heartbreak for AZ. The Alkmaar side gave away a 3-0 lead over Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar, who scored four times in the second half.

“I can’t explain it, this is as bad as it gets,” coach Pascal Jansen said after away game.

AZ were semifinalists in the third tier European competition last season.
