Schools minister Dennis Wiersma has said he will continue to speak to members of staff personally, following two new complaints about his alleged rude and intimidating behaviour.

Complaints about Wiersma flying off the handle first surfaced in April. He promised to make amends several times and apologised to the VVD parliamentary party last month. Sources around the party told NOS the minister had been given “a last chance”.

In a written statement the education minister, who is currently on sick leave, said he would be speaking “to those involved”. “This is an ongoing process. If people are bothered by things I hope they will come to me,” the statement read.

The new incidents took place during a symposium about 25 years of vocational education a week ago and allegedly involved “verbal and physical intimidation”.

According to the Telegraaf, Wiersma also shouted at school inspectors and the inspectorate said “intense talks” had taken place. Wiersma later said he spoke to officials about “guarantees for the quality of education” and the “need for independence” of the inspectorate but did not specify if he found this to be lacking.

Sophie Hermans, who leads the VVD in parliament, said she welcomed Wiersma’s intention of speaking to the members of staff involved.
