A block of flats in Nijmegen has been evacuated while bomb disposal specialists searched a basement garage for explosives.

Police were called to the building in Malvert 62nd street to investigate reports of a break-in on Sunday night.

Officers fired shots at a car that broke through the garage doors and sped away as they arrived, striking a woman who needed hospital treatment. Her condition is not known, a spokesman told Omroep Gelderland.

Residents were ordered to leave the flats after police found “suspicious substances” in one of the garages and in the getaway car, which was found abandoned in Meijhorst 29th street.

Members of the bomb disposal unit EOD sealed off the area and made the area safe. Residents were given shelter elsewhere in the neighbourhood.

Witnesses and owners of security cameras in the area are asked to contact police.
