Support grows in the Netherlands for EU membership

The number of people in the Netherlands backing membership of the European Union has grown, and fewer people support a Nexit, the Irish Times reported on Thursday.

People across Europe were asked how they would vote in a hypothetical referendum on whether or not their country should remain in the EU in both 2016-2017 and 2020-2022.

Support for leaving the EU fell in every member state for which results are available, led by a drop of 11.8 percentage points in Finland. In the Netherlands, the proportion of people saying they would vote to leave fell 8.4 percentage points to 13%.

At the same time, the percentage of people saying they would vote to stay rose by 11.2 percentage points in the Netherlands, taking that total to 83.4%, the Irish Times said.

The research is covered in the latest edition of the European Social Survey, an academic think-tank based at the City of London University.

Several anti-EU parties currently have seats in parliament, but support for one of the most vociferous, the far right Forum voor Democratie, has collapsed.
