Around 8% of people switched health insurer at the end of last year, the highest proportion in six years.

Figures compiled by industry body Zorgverzekeraars Nederland show some 1.4 million people cancelled their policy during the ‘transfer window’ in December.

They have until the end of this month to find a new insurer for 2023 if they have not done so already.

The figures do not break down people’s reasons for switching, but the rise in insurance premiums and the abolishment of collective discounts are thought to be two factors. The average basic insurance package costs between €3.75 and €9.30 a month extra this year.

Zorgverzekeraars Nederland will compile a more detailed report later in the year identifying which policies people have taken out and whether they have varied their excess charge or deductible.

Everyone in the Netherlands is required to take out basic health insurance cover, known as the basispakket, the contents of which are specified by law. This year contraceptive pills for women under 21 were added to the basic package, while Vitamin D pills were taken out.

The excess charge or eigen risico is set at €385 a year, but people can raise it to as much as €885 in order to cut their monthly premiums.
