The outbreak of monkeypox is drawing to an end in the Netherlands and the vaccination campaign will also be wound down shortly, public health institute RIVM has confirmed.

People considered most at risk will still be able to get a vaccination up to the end of the month ‘but the number of new infections has been very low for a couple of weeks, and the campaign is being stopped,’ the RIVM said.

After a peak in the number of infections in the summer, only nine individuals were diagnosed with the virus over the past two weeks.

Nevertheless, the virus will continue to circulate and people should still be aware of the risks, the RIVM said.

A committee of experts will convene in November, and will review whether vaccinations or other measures may be needed in future.
