The total number of supermarket special offers for meat and meat products went down for the first time since 2015 in the first six months of this year, animal welfare campaign group Wakker Dier said on Tuesday.

The number of special offers is now back at the level of 2020, after reaching a new record in the first half of 2021, although several supermarket chains, including Plus and Aldi, did increase their individual offers, Wakker Dier said.

The reduction was notable across all types of meat and there was little change in the number of special offers for meat replacement products.

Wakker Dier said the change maybe down to the climate agreement signed by supermarkets, in which they pledged to encourage more plant-based diets.

‘Supermarkets can only realise these promises if the drop in meat special offers continues,’ said spokeswoman Anne Hilhorst. ‘That is best for both climate and animal.’
