The Dutch military police force Marechaussee have confirmed they have taken over the investigation into the death of a child in Rotterdam on Sunday.
A 22 year-old man was apprehended by police following ‘a stabbing incident’ at Wolphaertsbocht in Rotterdam but as he is a soldier in the Dutch armed forces, the case falls under the jurisdiction of the Marechaussee.
The age of the child and the circumstances of its death remain unclear. Video footage of the man’s arrest showing neighbours shouting abuse suggests that the victim may have been a baby. Dutch media report that the child was around six to eight months old.
The Marechaussee said an investigation has been started and that more information will be released in the next few days.
