The Carnaval festivities in the Limburg town of Horst were halted early on Monday evening after a 21-year-old man was stabbed to death at a party.

Cafes closed their doors and turned off their music after the stabbing, which happened in the town centre. The man was found by passersby and died shortly afterwards.

One person has since been arrested in connection with the attack after eyewitnesses were able to provide a good description of the possible suspect.

The south of the Netherlands has been celebrating Carnaval over the past weekend. The festivities were cancelled in 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, the event was more low key than usual and most of the big parades were scrapped.

The 2020 Carnaval festivities are thought to be one reason why the virus took hold first in the south of the country.

Carnaval, the feast that traditionally preceded the big fast at Lent, ends on Tuesday.
