City council register slashes holiday rental availability in Amsterdam
Holiday home rental company Airbnb has lost 80% of its addresses in Amsterdam following the introduction of new rules requiring owners to register with the city, the Volkskrant reported on Monday.
On March 28, there were 16,648 properties in the capital for rent via the platform, but that total had plunged to 2,924 by October 4, the Volkskrant said.
In total, there are now 4,128 properties in Amsterdam on holiday rental platforms, including the likes of Booking.com and Tripadvisor. Landlords are limited to 30 days rental a year and a maximum of four guests.
Those found to be breaking the rules can be fined up to €21,000 from next year.
Private home owners in Amsterdam had until the beginning of October to register their homes as potential holiday rentals with the city council.
The city hopes the measure will help reduce the problem of over-tourism and release more properties into the ordinary rental market.
Airbnb, which had earlier resisted attempts to limit the number of days properties could be rented, told the paper it had removed all Amsterdam addresses without a registration number from its website on a voluntary basis.
The national government is also working on legislation which would give local councils more powers to tackle holiday letting within their boundaries.
