ING to slash local bank branch network by more than half, losing 440 jobs
ING is more than halving its number of branches in the Netherlands, leading to the loss of 440 jobs.
Only 59 high street branches will be left after the 69 scheduled for closure are shut, the bank said on Thursday.
At the same time, the bank said it is expanding the number of service points in other shops, such as the Bruna book and office supply chain, by 75 to 321.
ING currently employs 15,000 people in the Netherlands.
‘More and more things are now easy to arrange digitally,’ said ING Nederland chief executive Ruud van Dusschoten. ‘Nevertheless, personal contact is and remains essential and indispensable for a large group of customers. And we offer that with our nationwide network of 380 offices and service points.’
Last November the bank announced plans to close offices in South America and Asia, and downsize integration operations in several EU countries, shedding some 1,000 jobs in total. In July last year, ING said it would close 170 branches in the Netherlands.
