Amsterdam football club Ajax has blundered by failing to register new signing Sébastien Haller for the Europa League competition.
Ajax bought the West Ham player for a club record fee of €22.5m this winter transfer period.
Ajax is trying to rectify the situation but, broadcaster NOS reports, the likelihood of success is small. As yet, it is unclear what went wrong.
Ajax should have registered all the players eligible for the European competition via a special Uefa system by midnight on Tuesday.
‘It is an administrative error, with computers, ticking or not ticking a box,’ head coach Erik ten Hag told reporters. ‘Something went wrong. he was on the list and we will do all we can to convince Uefa.’
The Amsterdammers take on Lille in the knock-out phase of the competition later this month, having been demoted from the Champions League competition after finishing third in their group.
