Two armed men arrested on a train at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on Saturday are not thought to have been planning a terrorist offence, police said on Sunday.

The two men, aged 33 and 22, are from Amsterdam and were arrested by military police at the airport station, which is under the main terminal.

A fellow passenger had seen or heard a gun being loaded and contacted the authorities, the police said on Facebook. Military police, based at Schiphol, boarded the train at the airport and spotted the men, who matched the description given by the witness. One of the two men had the gun in his pocket.

The investigation into where the men were going and what they were planning to do is continuing, police said.
