The body of a man found in the water in Duivendrecht on the outskirts of Amsterdam on Wednesday morning is that of missing Scottish youngster Matthew McCombe, police have confirmed.

McCombe disappeared on March 14 after leaving his hotel at 6.15am. McCombe, the grandson of Celtic football legend Billy McNeill, was in the Dutch capital to celebrate his 21st birthday and was staying at the Novotel hotel on the edge of Buitenveldert.

Family and friends have been in Amsterdam to join in the search for the youngster,  who left the hotel carrying a can of beer, leaving his phone and cash behind. He was last seen walking along the Amstel river.

His body was found in the Weespertrekvaart, a body of water which leads from the Amstel close to where he was last seen. Police say they do not suspect foul play.

On average 18 people a year drown in the city’s canals, often while under the influence of alcohol.
