Wine from Dutch importer spiked with MDMA, kills Belgian woman

A woman from Puurs in Belgium has died after drinking from a spiked bottle of red wine, originating from a Dutch company, broadcaster NOS reported on Thursday.

The woman, who died in December, was found to have a deadly dose of MDMA and MDA in her blood. The compounds are used in the making of the party drug ecstasy but the 41-year-old had no history of drug use, legal officials in Antwerp said.

The woman is said to have drunk a small amount of the wine and thrown the rest away because it tasted bad. She lost consciousness not long afterwards and later died.

Police have not yet been able to find out where the bottle, a 2016 Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon from Dutch brand Black & Bianco, came from.

Black & Bianco says the bottle did not have its original cork – which should have been black, not beige. In addition, the foil bearing the company logo around the neck of the bottle was missing.

‘We are extremely shocked by the news,’ the Nuenen-based company said. ‘So far this is the only bottle that has turned up but if anyone thinks they may have one, they should not open it, but alert the police instead.’
