Failed British travel agent Thomas Cook’s Dutch subsidiaries have been shut down after they were unable to stitch together a rescue package.

Thomas Cook NL and Neckermann Reizen had been exploring the options of carrying on as independent businesses or in partnership with other European branches after the parent company ceased trading eight days ago.

However, their efforts failed to produce a viable business plan, leading the district court in Amsterdam to declare them bankrupt on Monday.

Customers who are currently on holiday will not have to come home early and those who have booked ahead will be refunded because both companies are covered by the travel trade’s collective indemnity scheme, the Stichting Garantiefonds Reizen (SGR).

Several interested parties are said to have been in touch with the administrators about buying out the businesses either in whole or in part. The 200 staff have applied for collective redundancy.
