16,000 police cases put on ice? Minister pledges more information

Justice minister Ferd Grapperhaus has told MPs he wants the number of cases put on ice by police because of a lack of manpower to be brought down.

Broadcaster NOS reported on Wednesday that police had stopped investigating some 16,000 cases which had reasonable chance of being solved because of the shortage of detectives.

Most involved simple crimes such as physical abuse which did not lead to injury or shoplifting, police told the broadcaster.

Grapperhaus told angry MPs that he would make a fuller report on the broadcaster’s claims next week.

Police are currently investigating some 40,000 crimes and receive some one million crime reports a year, NOS said.
