Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport has dropped plans to introduce a fee for motorists who drop passengers off or pick them up, local broadcaster AT5 said on Wednesday.

Local authority Haarlemermeer told AT5 it would never give permission for a private company to charge fees for using roads and that a request to introduce paid visits has never been received.

This summer, the Telegraaf said Schiphol was considering introducing a fee for people who drop off friends and relatives by car. ‘However, we can’t give any details, we are still thinking about it,’ the paper quoted a spokesman as saying. Insiders told the Telegraaf that a fee of €5 was being considered.

Around one in four passengers using the airport are dropped off by car.

Several airports in the UK have introduced drop-off charges.
