Baby Yassin was born last Sunday in the hotel bathroom in Hurghada, where Britt was staying. A trainee nurse, she realised she was giving birth and placed clean towels on the bathroom floor. ‘The child was born in a couple of minutes,’ her mother Silvia van Baarlen told RTL.

Britt had been suffering from stomach cramps and diarrhea, but thought she had eaten something which had upset her, her mother said. ‘After the birth, the baby began to cry and had a good colour, so she knew it was alright.’

There was one problem. Britt’s mobile phone had stopped working and the hotel phone only took incoming calls. In addition, her room was fairly isolated within the hotel. She had been on a family holiday but the rest had gone back the previous day.

When hotel staff realised she had not been seen, they phoned her and the manager took Britt and her baby to hospital.

Britt now wants to return home but is stuck until a passport has been organised for the baby. That has to be requested at the British embassy in Cairo, a five hour journey away. In addition, the baby’s father can’t apply for a birth certificate because Britt is not sure who he is.

‘She met him at a party and has had no contact with him since,’ Britt’s mother said. ‘She doesn’t know who he is, but perhaps he will come forward if he reads this.’
